How Weight Loss can Reverse TYPE 2 Diabetes?

The advent of technology and internet has allowed readers to become aware of Diabetes and its related issues. However, it also has opened up newer opportunities of understanding the disease with a radical approach that allows them to stay conscious about their health. This might be either in their lifestyle changes or in the eating habits. As per one of the recently published articles, a new report suggests that a good weight loss directly affects on curing type 2 diabetes. The study also stated that even if one has been suffering from this disease for about 6 years, weight loss can cure diabetes for even such patients.

A new study from Newcastle and Glasgow Universities highlighted that diabetes can be reversed by losing weight, to such an extent that the patients can stop medication and are totally free of the symptoms and risks. 9 out of 10 people in the trial who lost 15kgs or more put their type 2 diabetes into remission.

The reason why diabetes is high in people with heavy weight is due to the fact that the fat gets stored in abdomen which causes the liver and the pancreas to malfunction. This can further have adverse effects that might be anything from life-threatening complications like heart and kidney diseases to blindness and foot amputations. Losing weight ensures that the fat accumulated is toned down thereby allowing the organs to function normally. This means that not only diabetes is controlled but the sufferer can completely get rid of medication. Globally, the number of people with type 2 diabetes has quadrupled over 35 years, ascending from 108 million in 1980 to 422 million in 2014. This is expected to increase to 642 million by 2040.

Radical diet to reverse type 2 diabetes

  • Consume around 825–853 calories per day for 3 to 5 months
  • There must be a follow-up done by the doctor where few foods can be reintroduced
  • The diet must be balanced
  • The diet must also be followed with physical exercise
  • Avoid processed foods
  • Switch to lean meats and high-fibre vegetables
  • Reduce consumption of carbohydrates

One must also keep in mind that losing all the 10-15kgs at one go is not advisable. The required nutrition for the body must be maintained and also must be monitored to ensure the correct blood sugar levels. It is also important to realise that weight loss should not be a result of crash diet. It is a planned therapy that might result in complete cure. Having said this, the above said fact may not hold good for all diabetics.
