What is type 1 Diabetes?

Diabetes is a term used to describe a cluster of conditions in which the body is unable to produce any or enough effective insulin. This is a hormone needed for glucose to enter the cells to be converted to energy.

There are two main types of diabetes, known as “Type 1 Diabetes” and “Type 2 Diabetes”.

Some old names for Type 1 Diabetes include “Juvenile Diabetes”, “Insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus” and “IDDM”. These old names should not be used, as they are no longer considered correct.

It’s rare. Only about 5% of people with diabetes have type 1. It’s more common in whites than in African-Americans. It affects men and women equally. Although the disease usually starts in people under 20, it can happen at any age.
