HOMA-IR Insulin Resistance Calculator
Enter your fasting insulin and fasting glucose from the same blood test to get a HOMA-IR score. It shows what the score may suggest about insulin resistance, for free and without storing anything.
This tool is for education only. It is not a diagnosis or a treatment plan. Never stop or change a prescribed medicine without your doctor. Nothing you enter is stored or sent anywhere.
How HOMA-IR is worked out
HOMA-IR (homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance) = fasting insulin (µIU/mL) × fasting glucose (mg/dL) ÷ 405. With glucose in mmol/L, divide by 22.5 instead. The result is rounded to two decimals.
What the score may suggest
| HOMA-IR | Reading shown |
|---|---|
| Under 2.0 | In the usual range |
| 2.0 to 2.9 | Some insulin resistance is likely |
| 3.0 or more | Marked insulin resistance is likely |
Cut-offs differ between laboratories and populations, and studies in Indian adults have used values from about 2.0 to 2.5. Treat the bands as a guide for a conversation with your doctor, not as a diagnosis.
How to take the test
- Fast for 8 to 12 hours; water is fine.
- Insulin and glucose must come from the same blood sample.
- Avoid hard exercise and alcohol the day before.
Who cannot use HOMA-IR
HOMA-IR is not valid for people who inject insulin, because the insulin measured is no longer only their own. The calculator shows no score if you answer yes to injecting insulin.
Common questions
A score under 2.0 is usually considered in the usual range. Some labs use 2.5 as the upper limit, which is why you should discuss your result with your doctor.
It may suggest that your body needs more insulin than usual to keep blood sugar steady, called insulin resistance. It is common before type 2 diabetes develops.
Walking after meals, a smaller waist, good sleep and balanced meals all help. Your doctor can advise on anything more.
Injected insulin is measured in the test along with your own, so the score would be meaningless.
No. HbA1c shows your average sugar over three months. HOMA-IR estimates how well your body responds to insulin at one moment.
