Healthy weight by height
On Asian cut-offs a healthy BMI is 18.5 to 22.9; overweight starts at 23 and obese at 25. These are lower than the older international cut-offs because Indians tend to carry more body fat and develop diabetes at a lower BMI.
| Height | Healthy weight range |
|---|---|
| 150 cm | 41.6 to 51.5 kg |
| 155 cm | 44.4 to 55.0 kg |
| 160 cm | 47.4 to 58.6 kg |
| 165 cm | 50.4 to 62.3 kg |
| 170 cm | 53.5 to 66.2 kg |
| 175 cm | 56.7 to 70.1 kg |
| 180 cm | 59.9 to 74.2 kg |
| 185 cm | 63.3 to 78.4 kg |
| 190 cm | 66.8 to 82.7 kg |
How the 12-week target works
If your BMI is 23 or above, the target is the higher of 95% of your current weight and the top of your healthy range. The weekly pace is the difference divided by 12, capped at 0.75 kg a week. Losing about 5% of your weight is the amount shown in diabetes-prevention research to make a difference.
There is no loss target if your BMI is in the healthy range or below 18.5, or if you are pregnant.
Common questions
What is the ideal weight for my height?
Use the table above or the calculator. It shows the weight range that keeps your BMI between 18.5 and 22.9.
Why are Indian BMI cut-offs lower?
At the same BMI, Asians have more body fat and a higher risk of diabetes and heart disease than Europeans, so overweight is counted from 23.
How fast should I lose weight?
About 0.25 to 0.75 kg a week is a steady, safe pace for most adults.
Is BMI enough?
No. Waist size matters too. Try the waist ratio calculator.
Can I use this during pregnancy?
No. Weight changes in pregnancy are guided by your doctor.
